Tacoma Symphony Orchestra to perform Prokofiev's Peter & the Wolf

Kick-off for Mini Maestros Family Series.

Tacoma, WA - Tacoma area families will enjoy a special treat this month when the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra opens its Mini Maestros family series with a performance of Peter and the Wolf at the Rialto Theater in downtown Tacoma on Sunday, January 25 at 2:30 p.m.

Conducted by Music Director Sarah Ioannides, the performance will feature the famous piece by Sergei Prokofiev that has introduced generations of children to symphonic music.

Peter and the Wolf tells the story of a young boy living with his grandfather in a forest clearing, and the adventure he and his animal friends have with a wolf that comes in from the meadow. Each character in the story is represented by a musical instrument, or groups of instruments, in the orchestra. Peter and the Wolf will be narrated by Michael Sandner. This performance is sponsored by TAPCO Credit Union.

A musical instrument petting zoo will be held an hour before the concert - an opportunity for youngsters to touch, handle and try out instruments. For tickets, $7 for children and $10 for adults, call 253-591-5894 or 800-291-8573 or visit www.tacomasymphony.org.; Series packages are also available.

The Mini Maestros family concert series, debuted in 2013, is a joint project of Tacoma Symphony, Ted Brown Music, and the University of Puget Sound Community Music Program. The series is designed for young children and their families, and each program introduces one of the 'families' of instruments that makes up the symphony orchestra: woodwinds, strings, brass and percussion. Additional support has been provided by the Bamford Foundation, the Washington State Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Mini Maestros series presenting sponsor is Ted Brown Music.

Peter and the Wolf will be followed throughout the Spring by three programs for small ensembles - String Quintet, Brass Quintet, and Percussion Quartet - held in Schneebeck Hall on the campus of University of Puget Sound. Scheduled programs are Once Upon a String February 15th, 3-2-1 Brass Off! March 15th, and Percussion on Parade April 19th. Tickets and information available at www.tacomasymphony.org.
