The Grand Cinema & the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium’s Karen Povey present “Science on Screen"

Learn about tiger conservation and watch “Life of Pi” at the Grand Cinema!

The Grand Cinema is proud to collaborate with Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium’s Associate Curator of Education, Karen Povey for an evening of “Science on Screen” on January 12th.

Povey will give a presentation on the role of zoo-based breeding in tiger conservation, followed by a screening of the 2012 film, “Life of Pi” (PG).

As tiger populations drop dramatically - fewer than 3,500 remain in the wild - zoos play an increasingly important role in conserving this magnificent predator. Learn the science behind zoo Species Survival Plans that keep tiger populations successfully reproducing and genetically healthy.

‘Science on Screen,’ originally started by Coolidge Corner Theater in Boston, is a program that creatively pairs films with lively introduction lessons by notable figures from the world of science, technology, and medicine. The Grand Cinema received a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Coolidge Corner Theatre Foundation to bring Science on Screen back to Tacoma and Pierce County for a second year!
