TPS announces summer school offerings; registration open through May 9 for most programs
Tacoma Public Schools’ summer school programs include classes for students to make up credits, receive assistance transitioning into middle and high school, career and technical education offerings and Lincoln Tree Farm camp.
- Credit Retrieval (June 16-July 10): Opportunity to recapture lost credit(s) using an online program called Edgenuity. Two sessions will be offered at the district’s five comprehensive high schools (Foss, Lincoln, Mount Tahoma, Stadium, Wilson). Students will have access to teachers while at school and will need to spend an additional three hours per day for independent work. Open to high school and incoming 9th-grade students.
- Transition Program (Aug. 18-21): Introduces incoming students to the school building in order to acclimate them into the new school environment. All comprehensive schools will participate and share how to navigate the new school, understand schedules and routines, meet teachers and staff, and learn and develop social/emotional and academic skills. Open to incoming Kindergarten, 6th- and 9th-grade students.
- Pierce County Skills Center Summer School (June 23-July 31): Variety of Career and Technical Education classes offered through Pierce County Skills Center’s Summer School at Lincoln, Mount Tahoma and Wilson high schools and community partner sites. Open to high school students.
- Lincoln Tree Farm Summer School and Day Camp (July 21-Aug. 8): Rigorous training in curriculum and development of roles as camp counselors for the first two weeks at Lincoln High School, followed by a third week at Lincoln Tree Farm camp serving as camp counselors for incoming 7thgraders. Open to high school students who’ve successfully completed an Environmental Science class.
- Ready! Set, Read - Tacoma! (July 7-31): A program for elementary students learning science, math, literacy, movement and the arts. Fun activities mixed with story time will help students learn to love reading.
Other summer school programs are by invitation only to students with special academic needs or English language assistance.
