Tree Planting Project Has Begun Along Interstate 5

As part of efforts to enhance Tacoma’s gateways, the City of Tacoma’s Environmental Services and Public Works departments have begun planting 75 trees along Interstate 5 near the South 84th Street overpass.  On Monday, April 6,City crews worked alongside Deputy Mayor David Boe and members of the Washington Conservation Corps to plant the first tree of this project.

“As the saying goes, ‘The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now,’” said Boe. “I really look forward to watching this grove of oaks mature and create a defined visual gateway into Tacoma along Interstate 5.”

The project is part of the City’s Urban Forest Policy Element to manage, protect and expand Tacoma's tree canopy.Species of trees used were selected for their drought and disease tolerance, as well as their resistance to the effects of urban pollution. This project also allows the City to build a lasting partnership with the Washington State Department of Transportation for continued opportunities to enhance the environment within the city.
