University Book Store “Refreshes” Tacoma Store
Passersby who peer into the large windows of University Book Store on Pacific Avenue in Tacoma are seeing tables, comfy chairs, an inviting fireplace, and a big screen TV - the result of a months-long remodel or “refresh,” as store manager Sebastian Levy-Aldrete likes to call it. They’re also seeing a steady stream of customers heading from Starbucks into the store, thanks to an open-door agreement with their neighbor (who they actually share a real door with).
And of course they see books – lots of books: children’s, cookbooks, local Tacoma/Northwest titles, bestsellers. While the focus of the remodel was to create a community bookstore feel, Levy-Aldrete is quick to note, the ‘University’ in the store name means it also sells textbooks and a large selection of Husky gear for University of Washington Tacoma students, alumni and fans.
“We have seating, seating, seating. “Outdoor, indoor, and a beautiful brick fireplace!” enthuses Levy-Aldrete, who envisions University Book Store as a community destination where book lovers, shoppers, families and students “come on in, sit down and enjoy our space.” The store also has expanded its own food selection to include sandwiches, salads, snacks and beverages.
While the store’s total square footage wasn’t increased, the layout was “smartened up,” says Levy-Aldrete, to allow for a TV and viewing area for Husky game days, and a larger events space for author readings and book signings. In the coming months, the store will host a variety of local and national authors in the evenings and plans to introduce a weekly children’s story time.
On Friday, November 7th, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., University Book Store will hold a private Open House for Tacoma business, government, community and education leaders.
