UW Tacoma Announces Campus Visits of Chancellor Candidates

TACOMA, WASH. — The University of Washington Tacoma chancellor search advisory committee today announced five candidates for the position of chancellor of UW Tacoma.

Each of the five candidates will individually spend two days at UW Tacoma, participating in a full schedule of meetings and forums with the campus community, and making a public presentation.

Candidate Career Summaries

Dr. Daniel E. Little

Current position: Chancellor, University of Michigan-Dearborn

Dr. Little has served as chancellor at University of Michigan-Dearborn since 2000. He has a B.S. (1971) in mathematics and an A.B. (1971) in philosophy from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Ph.D. (1977) in philosophy from Harvard University.

Dr. Little’s first academic posting, as an assistant professor, was at University of Wisconsin-Parkside, from 1976-1979. He moved to Colgate University in 1979. From 1979-1985, he was an assistant professor, and from 1985-1992 he was an associate professor. In 1992, he was promoted to professor of philosophy, and from 1993-1996 he served at Colgate as associate dean of the faculty. During his tenure at Colgate, he served as a visiting associate professor at Wellesley College from 1985-1987, and he was a visiting scholar and then an associate at Harvard University’s Center for International Affairs from 1989-1995. In 1996, he moved to Bucknell University, serving as professor of philosophy and vice president for academic affairs from 1996-2000. In 2000, he became the chancellor of University of Michigan-Dearborn and professor of philosophy. In 2010 he was also appointed as professor of sociology at University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

Dr. Gail Hackett

Current position: Provost & Executive Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University of Missouri, Kansas City

Dr. Hackett has served as provost and executive vice-chancellor at UMKC since 2008. She has a B.A. (1973) in psychology, and M.Ed. (1975) in counseling, and a Ph.D. (1978) in counseling psychology, all from Pennsylvania State University.

Her first academic posting, from 1978-1983, was at Ohio State University as an assistant professor in counselor education. She moved to become an associate professor and the director of training for the counseling psychology program at University of California, Santa Barbara, from 1983-1988. She then moved to Arizona State University (Tempe). From 1988-1989, she was an associate professor in the counseling psychology program of ASU’s College of Education, earning a promotion to full professor in 1989. From 1993-1997, she directed the psychology-in-education division of ASU’s College of Education.  From 1997-2000 she served as the associate dean for academic programs and personnel in ASU’s College of Education. From 2000-2004, she served as the vice provost for academic personnel for all of ASU. From 2004-2008, she served as university vice provost and was named the founding dean of ASU’s University College. In 2008, she moved to UMKC to become a professor of counseling and educational psychology in the UMKC School of Education, and the provost and executive vice-chancellor for academic affairs for all of UMKC.

Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson

Current position: Vice-President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer, California State University, Fresno.

Dr. Teniente-Matson has served as vice-president at California State University, Fresno (“Fresno State”) since 2004. She has a Bachelor of Business Administration (1989) and an MBA (1998) from University of Alaska Fairbanks, and an Ed.D. (2013) from Fresno State.

Dr. Teniente-Matson served as a purchasing agent at University of Alaska Fairbanks from 1989-1991. In 1991 she moved to University of Alaska Anchorage, where she served as assistant director of purchasing from 1991-1993, acting director of purchasing from 1993-1995, director of procurement services from 1995-1996, director of procurement and business services from 1996-1998, associate vice chancellor for budget and finance from 1998-2000 and vice chancellor for administrative services from 2000-2004. In 2004 she moved to Fresno State and has since served as vice president for administration and chief financial officer.

Dr. Ronald S. Rochon

Current position: Provost, University of Southern Indiana

Dr. Rochon has served as provost at University of Southern Indiana since 2010. He has a B.S. (1983) in animal science from Tuskegee University, and an M.S. (1986) in animal science and a Ph.D. (1997) in educational policy studies from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Rochon’s first academic posting, from 1993-1995, was at Texas A&M University as an assistant professor in educational curriculum and instruction. He moved to Washington State University in Pullman, Wash., serving from 1995-1997 as an assistant professor in the Department of Teaching & Learning, and directing the College of Education research fellows and summer teaching program. In 1997, he moved to University of Wisconsin-La Crosse as an associate professor in the Department of Educational Studies. From 1997-2000, he directed the master of education professional development program at UW-La Crosse. From 2000-2003 he served as interim director of the School of Education and an associate dean in the College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Teacher Education. From 2003-2005, he once again directed the master of education professional development program. Simultaneously, from 1998-2005, Dr. Rochon co-founded and directed UW-La Crosse’s Center for Cultural Diversity & Community Renewal. In 2005, Dr. Rochon moved to SUNY Buffalo State (State University of New York) as professor of education. At SUNY Buffalo State, he served from 2005-2010 as dean of the School of Education and associate vice president for teacher education. He moved to University of Southern Indiana in 2010 and has since served as provost and professor of education.

Dr. Mark A. Pagano

Current position: Provost and Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Montana State University Billings

Dr. Pagano has served as provost and vice-chancellor at Montana State University Billings since 2011. He has a B.S. (1979) in engineering, an M.S. (1983) in engineering, and a Ph.D. (1992) in engineering science from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Dr. Pagano’s first academic positions were in mechanical engineering technology in the College of Engineering at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. From 1983-1987 he served as assistant professor and from 1987-1992 as associate professor. From 1983-1992 he was also program coordinator for mechanical engineering technology. In 1994, Dr. Pagano moved to Purdue University. From 1992-1994 he was an associate professor in mechanical engineering technology in the College of Engineering, and from 1994-1998 he was professor and department head of mechanical engineering technology. From 1996-2002 he served as assistant dean for planning and program development in the College of Technology at Purdue, and the director of the College’s statewide outreach system. From 2001-2003, Dr. Pagano served as associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Technology at Purdue. In 2002, he became Purdue’s associate vice provost for engagement, and in 2003 he became dean of Purdue Extended Campus, a position he held through 2011. From 2007-2011, Dr. Pagano was co-director of Purdue’s University Regional Accreditation Project. In 2011, Dr. Pagano moved to Montana State University Billings, where he serves as the provost and vice-chancellor for academic affairs. From 2011-2013, he was also interim director of graduate studies at MSUB.
