Walk and Bike to Explore Park(ing) Day 2013
On Friday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Downtown On the Go, the City of Tacoma and Transportation Choices Coalition are teaming up for Tacoma’s fifth Park(ing) Day, turning select downtown parking spaces into parks. Local businesses, design firms, and artists will design and implement their parks throughout downtown Tacoma. The public can join organized tours of the park(ing) day spaces at noon (walkers will start at the base of the UWT stairs and cyclists meet outside the Harmon Tap Room on St. Helens).
All are invited to vote for their favorite space at any time on the Downtown On the Go Facebook page and winners will receive fame, glory and a $100 gift certificate to the local Tacoma business of their choice. A map of the locations and designers is available on the DOTG website.
Park(ing) Day is a national celebration where urban parking stalls are transformed from vehicle storage spots into mini parks. The event draws feet to the streets, creating community and supporting our local businesses while people enjoy the creatively converted spaces that are generally utilized only by cars. Park(ing) Day started in 2005 when Rebar, an art and design studio, transformed a San Francisco parking stall into a park for two hours. It has now grown to more than 975 parks in 162 cities across the world, 35 countries on 6 continents.
