Wellness and Peer Support Open House
Wellness and Peer Support Open House
Wednesday, February 27, 2013 from 1:00-3:00pm
Tacoma, February 20, 2013 TACID’s (Tacoma Area Coalition of Individuals with Disabilities) Wellness and Peer Support Division is hosting an informative overview of new program offerings. These include a monthly video discussion group, a monthly book study, “My Whole Health” Wellness Series, weekly Emotional Wellness Dialogues, a “Healthy Habits” series and peer support skills building.
Our Peer Support Division embraces and partners with people living with mental illness to both recover and to develop the resiliency and skills helpful in facing future hurdles in life. TACID creates opportunities for individuals with a mental health related disability to develop and set goals, create plans, nurture natural support systems, and participate in the direction and nature of their recovery. People receiving services in this program may participate in TACID’s volunteer, housing, and employment programs as well.
At a recent community meeting, one member stated that he was court ordered to attend a peer support group at TACID. He went on to say that the first three times he arrived, he stayed outside. On his fourth visit, he came inside and attended a support group then left immediately afterward. After a few more times, he began to interact with others in the group and began to feel safe here. He was able to communicate with staff as well and began to reach out to other groups and programs TACID offers. He began to not only feel safe, but have a hope for the future. He states that he would not be the man, husband, father, or friend today if it were not for TACID.
Come and hear about all the new and exciting programs to include topics in the “My Whole Health” Series such as health eating, stress reduction, and restful sleep. Topics in the Weekly Emotional Wellness Dialogues include hope, empowerment, what are my strengths, and personal responsibility. The “Healthy Habits” groups discuss topics such as smoking and shopping. The book study for February is Firewalkers. You won’t be disappointed no matter which groups you attend. There is something for everyone!
About TACID
The Tacoma Area Coalition of Individuals with Disabilities (TACID) has been promoting independence for people with disabilities through peer support, advocacy and self-sufficiency programs for more than 30 years. Born of a collaboration among several disability groups and others in the community, the core values of independence, dignity, and standing together have not only remained, but strengthened. Today more than 40 peer support groups and organizations and nearly 4,000 people a year use and benefit from TACID’s facility and programs through basic needs support, such as housing, clothing, and information/referral, through our education and employment support programs and by creating strong social and community connections through our peer support groups.
When you support TACID, you are making a bold statement that says “We value all members of our community and are part of the solution.” Community support is vital to preserving TACID’s mission. As an individual or corporate community member, you have the power to imagine the possibilities in favor of sustained excellence in program delivery. Helping people with disabilities in Tacoma and throughout Pierce County become more independent and self-sufficient is our mission.
