Women’s History Month Film Series to Run March 14 – 28

In recognition of women’s achievements past, present and future, the City of Tacoma has partnered with the University of Washington Tacoma to host a series of public film screenings beginning March 14. Films will play free of charge with community discussions following each screening. The series will culminate on March 28 with remarks by Deputy Mayor Victoria Woodards before the screening, a community discussion following the screening, and a spoken word event following the community discussion. The schedule is as follows:

Iron Jawed Angels
Starring Hilary Swank, Frances O'Conner, Julia Ormond and Anjelica Huston, this film captures the dynamic story of how political activists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns revolutionized the feminist movement and won women the right to vote.
Following this screening, Dona Ponepinto, president and chief executive officer of United Way of Pierce County, and T’wina Franklin, co-founder of Ladies First and academic instructor for MDC TRiO College Bound, will facilitate a community discussion.

Miss Representation
This documentary explores how mainstream media depictions misrepresent girls and women through limiting and sometimes disparaging representations. Featuring Condoleezza Rice, Katie Couric and Nancy Pelosi and Gloria Steinem, viewers get an inside look at what it means to say, "You can't be what you can't see."
Following this screening, Sarah Irish from Stand for Children and Pamela Duncan from the City of Tacoma’s Neighborhood & Community Services Department will facilitate a community discussion.

Deputy Mayor Victoria Woodards Speaks
on Women Inspiring Change: Past, Present and Future
Deputy Mayor Victoria Woodards was raised in Tacoma and is a proud graduate of Lincoln High School. She has served as a passionate leader in the community in several capacities, and is committed to working with the Tacoma City Council as they focus on building capacity for equity and empowerment, and on ensuring equitable access to foundational community assets.
Girl Rising
Be transported by the power of education across the globe. Through their stories, we learn how nine girls lifted themselves out of poverty. Mixing narrative and documentary, this film showcases girls' ability to change the world in the face of adversity.
Following this screening, Timmie Foster from Foster Enterprises, and Andrea Cobb, a research and policy analyst from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, will facilitate a community discussion.
Following the community discussion on this date, there will also be a spoken word session hosted by artist Stella Haioulani.
