YWCA Pierce County & Tacoma Urban League Host Selma Solidarity March

On Sunday March 8th, 2015 at 2 pm, the Tacoma community will come together in solidarity to support the 50th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March. Over 250 participants are expected at this event. YWCA CEO Miriam Barnett came up with the idea and says, “When I heard about the Selma March I immediately wanted to organize a Solidarity March in Tacoma. An idea became a reality when I contacted Victoria Woodards, CEO of the Tacoma Urban League and she was instantly on board.” Victoria Woodards commented, “The Urban League has organized Marches before with a very short timeline. I see this as a great connection to a historic moment in the civil rights movement and we are thrilled to partner with the YWCA to make this happen.” The march will take place with the support of other community organizations including the City of Tacoma, ASCC, Pierce County Democrats, Tacoma Human Rights Commission and Tacoma Stands Up.
March participants will meet in the Fire Station 6 parking lot on the East side of the bridge. There will be limited parking available nearby. The March will start at 2 pm on the East side of the 11th street bridge and end on the West side with comments from Congressmen Denny Heck, former Representative Dennis Flannigan, former Mayor Harold Moss, community activist John Pushgaines, CEO of Tacoma Urban League and Tacoma City Council member Victoria Woodards and other civil rights leaders.
