Energy-Saving Streetlights Only Light Up When They Need To

A Dutch designer created a system to automate streetlights: they light up when they’re needed, and go dim when they’re not.

The system saves energy, and has other features built in for efficiency, like sensors that know when a light burns out or malfunctions. Of course there’s the possibility that darkened streetlights could have undesired negative impacts on safety. Other potential uses for the technology, including changing the color of the lights for early warning that an emergency vehicle is coming, make for intriguing possibilities…

Would you like to see these lights in your neighborhood?

(Thanks to Adrian for the tip.)
