Why are some states trying to ban LEED green building standards?

LEED has gone from being the unusual exception in construction to a common expectation for new construction projects. Now traditional construction material industries are fighting back, demanding a redefinition of what exactly "green" building is.

34 states have legislation either requiring or incentivizing LEED practices for public buildings. Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia are among a handful of states that are considering or have passed legislation that would have the effect of banning new construction built with public money from seeking (or requiring) LEED certification or similar standards. Grist looks at the conversation around the challenge to LEED standards.

Is it all a cynical ploy by lumber and other industries to maintain their market share, or is there something in the challenge to LEED's growing influence?
