City Council Meeting- Jan. 15, 2008
Tonight’s City Council meeting was short, sweet and to the point. Lots of contract adjustments and authorizations of money already budgeted. A couple of items of interest:
- The Council accepted the Tacoma Fire Department’s 2008-2012 Strategic Plan. This is one step in the accreditation process they are currently undergoing.
- Resolution 37375 was adopted, setting the City Manager’s Parking and Mobility Strategy into motion.
(Previously on Exit133) - Ordinance 27684 was passed unanimously, creating the Alcohol Impact Area in the Lincoln District.
We’re thankful for the Council’s timely business and the ability to leave City Hall before 8pm. Woo hoo!

I’m glad to hear that the city adopted the Parking and Mobility Strategy. This is a huge step towards creating a vibrant community based on pedestrians, not cars. Now, as Erik said, hopefully they follow through.
What are the next steps for this program?

I’m curious to hear what “setting the City Manager’s Parking and Mobility Strategy into motion” really means. Like Ben said, what’s the next step? Do we have to put something to a vote, and does that need to happen soon or later? Or is this now going to the design stage where they’ll figure out where the streetcars run and the garages go and so on, in which case when’s the public comment period?

From my understanding that the city is going to work the parking group and other stakeholders to come up with a draft of an implementation approach. (How does one determine where there should be meters? What should the rates be? Where should parking remain free?)
The streetcars remain a desire but there is no funding idenfied for them yet as far as I know.
There have been rounds of public forums on the parking issues. I suspect there will be many more.

Well when they want to implement the plan, we have the City Council and all employees in the City Hall are the first ones to implement it…
