Destination Point Defiance - Tonight

A lot goes on around Tacoma on the third Thursday of the month, and beginning tonight, alongside all the museum and other happenings, Metro Parks Tacoma will be starting a series of conversations with the public about long-range plans for Point Defiance. Park and Zoo officials and the City have been busy working on several Point D-related projects, including some exciting potential upgrades to the park, and a connection that could bring new life to some neglected corners, and they want to talk to you about it.

Plans include a seasonal visitor center in the historic lodge, restoration of the Pagoda after last year’s unfortunate conflagration, and an update to the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium’s long-range master plan, (perhaps a new aquarium?). Master plan updates for Fort Nisqually and the old Camp 6 site are also in the works.

Chances are you’re at least a little familiar with Tacoma’s dream of creating a continuous promenade connecting Downtown Tacoma with Point Defiance Park. Recently we’ve heard more about the connectors at the other end of Ruston Way – the Waterfront Master Plan debates and questions about what the Prairie Line trail will look like as it runs through UWT – and now Metro Parks asks you to turn your attention to what they’re calling the “Missing Link” between Ruston Way and the park.

Tonight’s big picture conversation about Point Defiance Park, kicks off the on-going monthly dialogue with the community about things that are happening now, in the near future, and in long-term visions for the park.
