Pagoda at Point Defiance Park on Fire This Morning
The News Tribune is reporting this morning that a large and difficult fire has been blazing at the Pagoda in the Point Defiance Japanese Garden. The structure was erected in 1914 as a replica of a 17th century Japanse lodge.
The TNT will post updates here as more details emerge. We hope the damage to this beautiful old building is neither extensive nor permanent.

Actually this structure was build as the end of the line for the Tacoma Street car system. It was later converted to the Pagoda with the addition of the Japanese Garden.
Let it be saved…

You know the Park has wanted it gone despite protest… would be terrible if this is what they resorted to… hopefully the firefighters can tell if the fire was caused by arson and who did it.

Sounds like the building can be repaired. Thankfully, our Tacoma Fire Dept arrived in time to put out the fire. Thank you TFD for saving this piece of Tacoma.

@Jesse, it’s a fact the park proposed removal of the pagoda. From the TNT: Investigators now say the fire is “suspicious in origin…”
Not sayin’ the park was behind the fire, but Clancy’s assumption probably passed through a lot of people’s minds…
