SR-16 Daytime Closures Planned
You may want to start planning now to avoid SR-16 this January.
WSDOT has announced that in order to keep the major project moving forward, work on the next phase of project will include the excavation and reconstruction of a section of SR-16, which must be completed before eastbound lanes can reopen. Major daytime traffic restrictions and overnight closures of eastbound 16 will be needed sometime next month, weather permitting.
A total of three nights of closures and two days of daytime restrictions will be scheduled for eastbound SR 16. Crews will pave and stripe a segment of highway to move eastbound SR 16 traffic from the current temporary eastbound viaduct onto the new permanent eastbound viaduct.
Work requiring restrictions of this magnitude would usually be done entirely at night to avoid traffic impacts, but the work needed here must be completed in one shot, which will mean crews working straight through a weekend.
Without a major reduction in traffic during the work, backups could reach as far as the Narrows Bridge - six miles away. Yikes.
