Tacoma City Council Meeting - April 14th, 2009

We must apologize for missing a few meetings. We now return to our regular posting with this evening’s Tacoma City Council meeting.

PROCLAMATIONS
The Mayor proclaimed April 24th, 2009, as Walk A Mile In Her Shoes Day and the month of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the City of Tacoma. He asked that we all communicate the message that “there’s something every man can do to prevent rape, sexual assault, and gender violence.”

RESOLUTIONS
Purchase Resolution No. 37774 awards a contract to Dimension Data, on its bid of $721,363.86 for Nexus 7000 Series switches. This increases the capacity of the data networks. The existing equipment was never designed to operate with the amount of data now being sent around, through, in, and out of the city.

Resolution No. 37775 expresses support for the Boys & Girls Club to be located at the South Tacoma Community Center campus, including a five-year commitment to provide operational funding in the amount of $250,000 a year for the years 2010 through 2014. This articulates an existing commitment. The reality, though, is that it doesn’t bind future councils. It’s all about intent …

Resolution No. 37776 authorizes the execution of Amendment No. 5 to the agreement with MultiCare Health Systems, Inc., in the amount of $80,000, for a cumulative total of $350,000, budgeted from the Workers’ Compensation Fund, for
employment-related medical examinations, and health and wellness services.

FINAL READING OF ORDINANCES
Ordinance No. 27794 (Continued from the meeting of April 7, 2009) amends Title 3 of the Municipal Code, entitled “Fire,” by amending Chapters 3.09, 3.10, and 3.12, to increase fees for certain fire code permits, adding certain definitions, and removing outdated language. Hmmm… okay.

Ordinance No. 27793 authorizes an extension to the cable television franchise ordinance with Comcast of Tacoma, Inc., and Comcast of Puget Sound, Inc., through December 31, 2009.

Ordinance No. 27795 amends Chapter 1.12 of the Municipal Code, relating to the Compensation Plan, to implement rates of pay and compensation for employees represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 483, Click! Unit, which covers approximately 59 employees, retroactive to September 16, 2008 through December 31, 2010.

DOWNTOWN PARKING PUBLIC HEARING

Tonight’s meeting also included a public hearing about the proposal to remove city requirements for parking in the International Financial Services Area. The recommendation would allow the market to determine what it needs. All public input was in support of the change. (Previously on Exit133)

Over and done. That was a quick meeting.
