Tacoma City Council Meeting - Jan. 26th, 2010
We thought last week’s meeting was short. OOooohhhh… it gets shorter. Tonight’s meeting had just one proclamation and one purchase resolution. Councilmember Boe decided to amend the resolution … and that added at least one minute to the ten minute meeting. Here are our notes:

RESOLUTIONS
Purchase Resolution No. 37977 awards contracts to:
- MultiCare Health System, in the amount of $240,000.00, including sales tax, budgeted from the Workers Compensation Fund, for medical care provider services, for an initial three-year period with the option to renew for one
additional two-year period, for a projected contract total of $400,000.00 - Right! Systems, Inc., in the amount of $218,170.64, plus sales tax, budgeted from the Public Works Wastewater, Surface Water, and Solid Waste Funds, for computer networking equipment for the Center for Urban Waters building; and
Councilmember Boe asked that the third item on the purchase resolution be moved to next week so that he can have additional time to study it. So, for next week, we’ll see:

Why are these recent council sessions so short? What is different now from the recent past? (before the new mayor and council members).

I just spent more time reading about the meeting than watching the meeting.
The differance:
1) The new Mayor is MUCH less talk-a-tive.
2) The newly elected council members are all about get the job done, not look at the job I’m doing.
3) It’s early in the year so there has not been many “BIG” items coming before council.
4) The public comment section has been either very brief or non-existent.

They’re short meetings because many of the council is new and they all have agendas that take a while to put together – especially doing it part time. I bet these meetings get longer in a few months. Just my assumptions here.

No offense to the former mayor, but his need to narrate the council’s meetings were the major contributor to the length of the sessions. It was, in my opinion, not value added. He was not the only problem. A couple of the other now retired members seemed to have a compulsive need to tell the “vast viewing audience” and the poor souls who stuck around about every meeting and event they attended each week.
Let’s hope the new councilmembers don’t share any of those behaviors.

Kudos to Mr. Boe for asking for time to actually READ the Purchase Resolution before approving it. In the past, Council Members would all nod their heads “Yea” when such a vote was asked while the staff pulled strings attached to the hairs on the backs of their necks. KPG, PS had asked for a 25% increase in the contract. You bet your sweet bippy it requires further reading.
I had my initial doubts about the choice of Mr. Boe. I’ll hold off on the crow buffet for now. But well done, Sir. Well done.
The rest of the Council should take note: THIS is what we expect from ALL of you.
