Tacoma City Council Meeting - May 5th, 2009

Are you wondering what happened at last night’s City Council meeting? Well … it wasn’t the most exciting way to spend Cinco de Mayo, but here are some of the details:

RESOLUTIONS

Purchase Resolution No. 37788 awards contracts to ESE Corporation for $75,000 in chip seal, $457,000 to Scarff Motors for automotive parts, and $322,675 for improvements to the landfill gas flare station at the Tacoma Landfill.

FINAL READING OF ORDINANCES

Ordinance No. 27797 amends the Municipal Code relating to the Compensation Plan to implement rates of pay and compensation for employees represented by the Tacoma Police Management Association, Local 26, and the Professional Public Safety Managers Association, which together cover approximately 32 budgeted positions, effective retroactive to January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2011.

Ordinance No. 27798 amends Chapter 1.30 of the Municipal Code, relating to Retirement and Pensions, to increase the number of days per year of paid military leave for eligible employees from 15 days to 21 days, pursuant to RCW 38.40.060 and Section 1.12.250 of the Municipal Code.

Then, Ordinance No. 27799 which amends the Municipal Code with regard to Retirement System contracting, was moved aside for future consideration.

I don’t know if we could make this any more exciting …

A question for those that know lots more than me (that means just about everyone). Instead of spending a butt load of money ($300,000+ counts as a “Butt Load)to repair the “gas flare station” at the Landfill, why aren’t we using this natural, Methane Gas for some sort of energy production such as a power plant, instead of just burning it off into the air??? Seems like a no-brainer. The Gas is already there and will be for centuries. Why not use it to produce electricity instead of just wasting it?

    J. Cote is right that using the landfill methane as an energy source makes sense. That’s exactly what the City did, for several years. Now the amount and quality of methane has degraded (the landfill is no longer in use) so the new flare system will replace the energy producing system that is no longer usable. Meantime, energy uses for methane produced at the LRI landfill (where Tacoma’s garbage is now transported) are being studied.
