Tacoma City Council to Determine Future of North Shore?
Do you remember our past debates about the North Shore Golf Course redevelopment? For those that don’t remember, this is a project in Northeast Tacoma that seeks to develop the North Shore Golf Course into a 860 unit housing area. Is it open space? Is it developable land? There have been lawsuits, mistakes, twists, and turns. Yet, it’s been a while since we’ve heard anything. Well, there’s a new development … sorta.
According to the TNT, a judge’s ruling earlier this month offered up this:
Kitsap County Superior Court Judge Russell Hartman sided partly with the City of Tacoma, which sought to block the development. The judge ruled that two 1981 agreements restricting the property for golf or open space are valid.
But Hartman also stressed the right of defendants to seek a change in the golf course’s use under city regulations and land-use laws.
What does this mean? It appears that the Tacoma City Council will get the final say. Any guesses what will come next? It’s been a circuitous trip so far …

I hope that the Council, for once, sides with reason and common sense. 860 Units is an awful lot of people to cram into such a small amount of area. The local schools will be quickly crowded, sevices will be stretched thin. It’s a mistake to do that to such a fine part of town. That’s right, N-Easters, we know you’re there. You are loved.

While (almost) everyone wishes to keep this open space, the city’s desire to use NE Tacoma as a bottomless well for cash predicts the development of Northshore GC.
