Expanded Vehicle-Free Hours on Five Mile Drive

A year-long pilot program during which we solicited public feedback regarding additional vehicle-free hours on the outer loop of Five Mile Drive has ended. The public comment period began in October 2013 and wrapped up last month.
Hundreds of comments were received over the course of the year. 78% of respondents agreed that additional vehicle-free hours should be added.
A majority of the respondents indicated that they use the park primarily in the morning before 11 am. Popular activities include walking, running, sight-seeing and visiting the beach.
In response to requests by park visitors, the outer loop of Five Mile Drive at Point Defiance Park will remain closed to motorized vehicles from opening until 10 am Monday through Friday. Saturdays and Sundays are vehicle-free from park opening until 1 pm.
Results will be used to support long-term planning decisions for Point Defiance Park in 2015.
